Description

The Data Scientist I role at Shoprite Group of Companies, based in Brackenfell, Western Cape, is a permanent position within the Finance category. This role supports Shoprite Financial Services in scaling its data capabilities by delivering high-quality, timely data outputs that unlock value through predictive modelling, dashboards, and insights across key products. The position plays a vital part in executing the data strategy and fostering a data-driven culture. The Data Scientist I will assist in transforming and modelling datasets to generate actionable insights, solve business problems using scientific methods, and communicate findings effectively. This role requires a blend of technical, analytical, and communication skills to interpret data and present it in a compelling narrative.

Responsibilities

Work with business stakeholders to identify requirements and model business scenarios
Translate business requirements into robust and scalable data solutions
Develop, validate, and execute basic algorithms and predictive models
Investigate problems, detect patterns, and extrapolate insights using data
Develop data structures and pipelines for organizing and standardizing data
Prepare, clean, and validate data to ensure integrity and accuracy
Test data mining models and select the most appropriate for projects
Adhere to quality assurance and documentation standards using version control
Cross-validate models to ensure generalizability
Assess data sources and gathering techniques to improve collection methods

Qualifications

Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a Data Scientist or similar role is essential
Experience in data modeling and dashboards is essential
Experience in a retail, commercial, or IT environment is desired
Working knowledge of SQL, Python, Low code, Tableau, and data science toolkits is essential
Proficiency in MS Office 365 with strong Excel skills is essential
Exposure to design thinking, lean, and agile principles is desired
